Ms. Wallig is a secondary school teacher at Oregon Connections Academy (ORCA). She started her teaching career in 2005 and has been teaching with ORCA since 2007. She holds a master of arts degree in teaching from Willamette University.
Ms. Wallig explains why she became a teacher below:
“When I was growing up, I was privileged to have wonderful teachers and parents who encouraged me to explore a wide variety of interests and who instilled in me a love of learning. I had a wonderful teacher in first and second grade, and I wanted to be just like her. When I was in college, I tutored middle school kids and became interested in working with that age group. As I got older, I discovered that not all students share the love of learning. By the middle school years, it is often snuffed out by lack of encouragement, ‘boring’ classes, or instructional methods that don’t meet the students’ needs. I became a teacher to motivate students to succeed and pass my love of learning on to them. I enjoy working with students and families who have made the choice to be here because they want to get an excellent education. It is so much fun to work with students who are excited to learn!
I love teaching at ORCA because I am able to make a difference for students who didn’t really seem to ‘fit’ in the traditional school environment. The biggest benefit of teaching in an online school versus a bricks-and-mortar one is that I spend most of my time working one-on-one with students via phone calls and WebMail, rather than having a classroom with 30+ students all at one time. Whatever student I am working with gets my undivided attention.”
