New Tuition-Free Online Public School Opens for South Carolina Students Seeking Alternative Path to Graduation
Open for enrollment, South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy is a fully online public school designed to help students get back on track and earn their high school diploma
Summerville, S.C. (Aug. 10, 2026) – Students across the Palmetto State who need a different path to earning their high school degree now have a new option: South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy. Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the tuition-free online public alternative school will help students overcome significant academic barriers, re-engage in learning, and earn a traditional high school diploma.
South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy is designed for students between the ages of 16 and 21 in grades 9-12 who are at least one grade level behind their age cohort or whose unique circumstances have made it difficult to continue in a traditional program. The alternative virtual school will use the nationally recognized Connections Academy program to provide students with the flexibility, support, and personalized attention they need to reengage in learning, build confidence, and achieve their goal of earning a traditional high school diploma.
“Every student has a story, and for some, that story includes obstacles that have made staying in school more difficult,” said Chris Webber, interim school leader of South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy. “Our goal is to create a learning environment where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to keep moving forward. We want learners to see new possibilities for their future and understand that graduation is still within reach.”
The South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy Experience
South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy will meet the needs of students who would benefit from a high degree of flexibility, personalized learning, and individualized support. The school will empower students to strengthen core academic skills, recover credits, stay on track for graduation, achieve their college and career goals, and build confidence for future success.
Through a diagnostic and adaptive learning program, students focus on the skills and course requirements they still need to complete rather than repeating lessons they have already mastered. The school follows a traditional academic calendar with the added benefit of round-the-clock access to the full curriculum to work on their assignments whenever it fits their routine.
South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy’s team of state-certified educators, specially trained in online instruction, provides individualized support tailored to each student's needs and goals. A parent or another designated adult serves as a student's Learning Coach, partnering with teachers to establish routines, monitor progress, and support attendance and engagement. Learning Coaches receive resources and ongoing communication to help their student succeed.
In addition to academics, students have opportunities to build connections with peers through global virtual clubs and activities throughout the year. The school’s flexible schedule also gives students more time to participate in sports, maintain a job, volunteer, explore creative interests, or pursue other personal passions outside the virtual classroom.
Now Enrolling for the 2026-27 School Year
First semester enrollment for South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy is still open. In its augural school year, the school will serve up to 300 students in grades 9-12, with opportunities to expand enrollment in future years.
As a public virtual school, there are no fees or tuition to attend South Carolina Bridge Connections Academy and all students will be required to meet the same academic standards and take the same assessments as traditional public school students.
