Special Education Programs & IEP Services
What Is Special Education?
Special education provides individualized instruction, accommodations, and services that help students with disabilities access learning and make academic progress. As part of this process, schools are required under Child Find to identify, locate, and evaluate students who may need special education services. At Connections Academy, students are supported in a flexible online environment designed to help them learn with confidence, often guided by an IEP or 504 plan that outlines their needs and goals.
What is an IEP and a 504 Plan?
- IEP: A plan under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for eligible students who need specialized instruction and services to support their learning.
- 504 Plan: A plan under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for students who need accommodations to ensure equal access to education.
Connections Academy accepts students with both IEPs and 504 plans. Families can share documentation during enrollment so the school can review needs and discuss appropriate supports.
Who Qualifies for an IEP?
- Have a documented disability recognized under IDEA
- Require specialized instruction, accommodations and/or modification, and/or related services to make progress
Eligibility is determined through formal evaluations and team review, following state and federal guidelines.
Who Qualifies for a 504 Plan?
- Have a disability that substantially limits a major life activity (including learning)
- Need accommodations to access instruction and participate in school
