State Constitution and Parental Rights Excerpts
Section 1 of Article VIII of the Michigan Constitution of 1963:
Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.
Section 10 of the Revised School Code:
It is the natural, fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to determine and direct the care, teaching, and education of their children. The public schools of this state serve the needs of the pupils by cooperating with the pupil’s parents and legal guardians to develop the pupil’s intellectual capabilities and vocational skills in a safe and positive environment.
American Rescue Plan Use of Funds
The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act requires each local education agency (LEA) that receives funding under the ARP Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund to develop and make publicly available on the LEA’s website a Use of Funds plan for ARP funds. Firearm Safety and Secure Storage
Under Michigan’s Child Access Prevention (CAP) Law (Public Act 17 of 2023), individuals must securely store firearms - locked, separate from ammunition, and with keys or unlocking devices inaccessible to minors - whenever a minor is likely to be present.
