Why I Became an Educator
"I teach physical science and other science courses for grades 8–12. I became a teacher because I love talking about science. I also love explaining the workings of the world to others. I love teaching at Nevada Connections Academy because each student is treated individually, and our incredible technology allows us to customize the program for each student.
The Online School Experience
There are many benefits to teaching at and attending Nevada Connections Academy. Certain students benefit from a greater flexibility in the curriculum, not only in content, but also in the implementation of that content. For example, certain students require that their assignments be assessed in a different manner because they are either exceptionally gifted or need extra assistance. In a bricks-and-mortar setting, students’ comparing assessments could lead to some confusion about why one student’s assignment was graded more or less stringently than another student’s. Our individualized approach allows us to tailor a student’s education to that individual student’s needs, without worrying about backlash or comparison to his or her peers.

My advice to prospective families: make sure that the motivation is there. Our program is not for students who have difficulty doing schoolwork due to lack of motivation. Staying on top of your child’s lessons and making sure the work is being done to his or her maximum ability is the number-one job of a Learning Coach. This does not mean that the Learning Coach needs to be familiar with the concepts, but it does mean that he or she has to take on the role of academic enforcer, making sure that the daily workload is completed."
