Brooklyn
High School Student
Brooklyn joined Great Lakes Learning Academy this year as a senior and works full time. She greatly appreciates the flexibility of our school and says, “If I need to take three days off to work, I can and then catch up.” Upon graduating, Brooklyn plans to attend the University of Tennessee.
Saving Money for College
“I’ve been surprised by how I can do my schoolwork at my own pace. …I like being able to look at my work schedule to see which weeks I have to work a lot, then adjusting my school schedule around it. I usually pick a few days a week to do nothing but schoolwork. That way I can still work full time to save money for college.”
Brooklyn’s Advice for New Students
“Just reach out if you need help because someone will help you,” says Brooklyn. “If they can’t help you, they’ll direct you to someone who will. …When I came here, I was scared to ask for help because of my experience at a brick-and-mortar public school, but I haven’t had any issues with my teachers here. …I’ve been able to contact them if I need them. My consumer math and English teachers have helped me a ton.”
Looking back at her experience at our school and looking forward to her future, Brooklyn says, “I always wanted to work ahead and finish early, but sometimes I just fell behind. I liked that I could just go online and get caught up. I’m so excited to finish up…and then go on to college!”
“What I like most about this school is the flexibility. I was able to work full time and finish school. For a while I even had three jobs at one time.”
