Keeping Online School Students Connected
Shouldn’t students (and their families) be able to choose the level of social interaction that they’re comfortable with, inside and outside of the classroom? At Washington Connections Academy, students are always able to do just that.
Washington Connections Academy is an online public school in Washington State that is committed to helping students connect with their classmates and their communities in a manner that works for them. We’ve designed our online LiveLesson sessions to provide opportunities for our students to share ideas, compare experiences, and have fun learning together. They can also connect with students who share their interests through online clubs and activities.
The school offers many ways for Washington State online school students to meet and learn through in-person field trips and other special school events. These events are great opportunities for socialization that allow students to develop connections and form friendships with one another, all while exploring the world around them. Through these social events, online school students will have fun developing communication skills, gaining social confidence, and developing leadership skills.
Flexibility for Extracurriculars
Many students attending an online school like Washington Connections Academy are busy with activities in their local communities. At Washington Connections Academy, we encourage our Washington State students to continue these wholesome activities as they can help build self-confidence and character. This is why we have designed our program with the flexibility to allow students to pursue and take advantage of extracurricular activities in their neighborhoods, and we actively encourage our students to do so.
Working with Families
Families are a crucial part of a student’s educational experience. As every family is different, each coming from very different circumstances, the same routine does not work for every student and family. At Washington Connections Academy, you can design a schedule that includes volunteer work, sports, performing arts, and other pursuits that can be tailored to your Washington State student’s needs.
Parents in particular perform a very important role as they have the opportunity to be involved in a student’s schooling by acting as a Learning Coach. A Learning Coach helps with a student’s educational journey by regularly communicating with teachers and helping the student stay on track and focused on education.
There are plenty of ways that parents and families can connect with teachers, counselors, and other parents. Some of these ways include:
- Open houses and online Learning Coach training sessions
- Secure Message Boards where parents can ask questions, share tips, and contribute resources for helping students succeed
- The Virtual Learning Connections blog, which is full of tips on a variety of topics relevant to busy virtual school families
- Club ORANGE, a network of Washington Connections Academy parents who are highly involved in the Washington Connections Academy community
Participating in the Online Learning Community at Large
At Washington Connections Academy, we want to help our online school students understand that they can be part of a broad online learning community. With the help of our community of Learning Coaches and community coordinators, we may arrange volunteer activities that enable our online school students to participate in events in their own communities throughout Washington State.
