When Is Native American Heritage Month?
Native American Heritage Month has occurred every November in the US since 1990, and the month provides an opportunity for both kids and adults to learn about Native American history as well as the vast number of cultures and traditions that exist across the United States.
How to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month
Here are just a few ways you and your child can celebrate Native American Heritage Month 2024.
Listen to Native American Stories
This 35-minute virtual field trip from National Geographic includes interviews from three Native Americans from around the United States who share their lived experience, their activism, and how they’re honoring or preserving native culture through conservation, art, and journalism.
Understand Alaskan Native Life and Heritage
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco partnered with the Alaska Native Heritage Center to create a five-part exploration of Alaskan native art, culture, and tradition. Students can watch videos centered around navigation, dance, and the environment and learn about the intricate weaving patterns used in blankets that tell clan stories and stories of grief, pass on history, or communicate dreams to those who view them.
Older students may want to explore the history of Alaska in more depth through a four-part documentary by AJ+, looking at Alaskan native culture and the impact of colonization and assimilation on native communities.
