Celebrated every March since 1987, National Women’s History Month is an opportunity to honor women’s contributions to society, culture, and history. Kids of all ages and genders can benefit from learning about the achievements of women—and it can help make the past more relatable to students and inspire future generations to continue making history.

Here are several National Women’s History Month activities to spark ideas for you and your kids to celebrate this special month.

1. Read about inspiring women.

Focus your reading efforts for the month on stories about important women in history. For younger kids, you can find picture books that break down these historic topics into bite-size, easy-to-understand stories. If you have older kids, encourage them to find a book written about a woman from history who inspires them. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

2. Visit a museum—in person or online.

Taking a trip to a museum is an excellent hands-on approach to learning about history. If you have upper-elementary to high school-aged kids, consider looking for museums in your area recognizing contributions of women as part of your Women’s History Month activities. You can also check out the National Women’s History Museum Online Exhibits, which feature a collection of trailblazing women of the past and present and are accessible anytime.

3. Watch videos or films about pioneering women.

There are many stories of trailblazing women—and a lot of it has been documented in films or documentaries. Consider finding an age-appropriate movie or film to watch with your kids.

A few examples for your Womens History Month activities include:

  • Hidden Figures, a 2017 film based on the true story of four Black women mathematicians who played a vital role in NASA during the early years of the space program.

  • RBG, a 2018 documentary chronicling the life and career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was the second woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

  • Queen of Katwe, a 2016 biographical film about a girl living in Uganda who becomes a world-class chess player.

4. Celebrate women in your everyday lives.

Prompt your child to write a letter or card to an important woman in their life. This could be a family member, teacher, friend, or coach, for example. You can even extend this project to include sending thank you cards for women leaders, healthcare workers, social response agents, and other important workers in your community. Women’s History Month activities are all about showing appreciation for the women who have come before us as well as the everyday women heroes making a difference in our lives.

5. Research an influential woman.

For a fun project idea, have your child choose an influential woman to learn more about. This could be someone who made historical contributions or someone from present day still making strides for women. Encourage your child to discover why this woman’s accomplishments were groundbreaking as well as what she was fighting against to achieve them. Have them present what they learned to peers or family members.

6. Share a new fact every day of the month.

Start every day of Women’s History Month in March by sharing a fact about women from history. Make it fun by writing each fact on a notecard or piece of paper. Then, each day, have your child pick a card and share the fact. If possible, display the cards on the wall, so at the end of the month you can see how much they’ve learned about women’s history.
