Keeping Virtual School Students Connected

Even though your student may attend school online, South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA) offers connections to an entire virtual school community. Students meet in online LiveLesson® sessions and are given the opportunity to share their ideas, compare different experiences, and have fun learning together. If your student wants even more social interaction, joining our clubs may be a good option. In addition, families can choose to connect with other school families according to their own comfort levels.

SCCA provides a variety of ways for online school students to meet face-to-face, including online school clubs, field trips, and other special school events. These social activities offer opportunities for students to explore the world around them and develop lasting friendships with other students. They also help students learn teamwork, gain more confidence, and develop better communication and leadership skills. And they are just plain fun!

Allowing Flexibility for Extracurriculars

We know that SCCA students are busy with extracurricular activities in their local communities. Our flexible scheduling may give students more time and convenience for participating in those activities. State law in South Carolina does allow online school students to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities through their local public bricks-and-mortar school. At SCCA, we also encourage each of our students to explore some interests outside the classroom that may help them build more confidence and character.

Working with Families

Family support is crucial to your online student’s educational experience. We understand that the same daily routine doesn’t work for every family and student. At SCCA, we give you the freedom to design a schedule that works for you, whether it includes sports, performing arts, volunteer work, or other pursuits.

Parents are asked to play the very important role of Learning Coach. Each family does this a bit differently, but in general, a Learning Coach helps provide structure, and helps keep students on track and in communication with their teachers.

SCCA families can connect with teachers, community coordinators, school counselors, and other SCCA parents online as well as in person through:

  • Open houses, local teaching centers, and online Learning Coach trainings
  • Secure Message Boards where SCCA parents post tips, questions, and resources that will help students to succeed
  • The Virtual Learning Connections blog, where Learning Coaches can find tips and information about various topics dedicated to busy virtual school families
  • Club ORANGE, a South Carolina Connections Academy network of parents who are highly involved in our SCCA community

At SCCA, we want our students to know that they’re part of a much broader virtual learning community. With help from Learning Coaches at home and our community coordinators, we help to arrange participation in various volunteer activities and other community events throughout the state of South Carolina.
