Kim Shaw
Elementary Math and Science Teacher
Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, University of California, Santa Barbara; Master’s Degree in Education, Point Loma Nazarene University
Kim Shaw started teaching in 2001 and joined Lowcountry Connections Academy (LCCA) in 2021, where she teaches math and science for grades 3-5. According to Ms. Shaw, the most rewarding part of teaching at LCCA is when a student books time for help and really wants to learn a challenging topic.
Why I Became a Teacher
I became a teacher because I have always found joy in helping children learn important skills. As a teenager, I taught swimming and helped children overcome their fears. It was very challenging and rewarding, and I knew then that I was meant to be a teacher.
The Online Experience at Lowcountry Connections Academy
I foster student engagement by encouraging everyone to be on camera and to actively participate, either in chat or off mute, while I’m teaching. My favorite classroom activity is “share and tell.” The students get so excited when we do this. Sharing things they personally value and enjoy helps us all feel more connected.
“I love seeing my students smile when they’ve learned something they didn’t think they could.”
— Ms. Shaw
What Families Considering This School Should Keep in Mind
Lowcountry Connections Academy is a great place for any student who wants to take an active and independent role in their own learning. It requires responsibility, dedication, and focus, and is a great way for students to own their learning.
An education here helps prepare students for a bright future because it requires a commitment to being responsible and active in their own learning. It also allows them to work at an independent pace, with a Learning Coach nearby to ensure understanding.
