Leilani Ward, an elementary school student from Dayton, started attending Ohio Connections Academy (OCA) in kindergarten because her parents wanted her to be able to learn at her own pace. And they liked the encouragement and close contact the teachers provided.

“While researching several online schools and looking into sample curricula, I found that Ohio Connections Academy really piqued my daughter’s interest,” said Leilani’s mother, Karen. “While watching the videos, she was having fun while learning, which still holds true to this day.

”In addition to the schedule flexibility Ohio Connections Academy offers, the Wards also appreciate how the school provides many different ways for teachers, students, and families to connect through video chat and local events and picnics. Karen says, "OCA has been a school that makes learning fun and is structured to teach students to become independent. Seeing Leilani follow the course lessons, become more independent and responsible in completing her schoolwork, and knowing when to ask for help makes me very proud."

Leilani was recently selected as one of Ohio Connections Academy’s Star Students in recognition of her hard work in and out of the classroom. Each month OCA recognizes two students in each of the four grade bands for their achievements in and out of the classroom. Leilani was nominated by her teacher Mrs. Welty, who said she appreciates Leilani’s love of learning and how hard she works every day to be “the best OCA student she can be.”
