Marshawney Quinn

OCA student Marshawney

Marshawney Quinn is a middle school student at Ohio Connections Academy (OCA). She lives in Cleveland, Ohio, with her family. Her big brother, Shamar, is also a student at OCA. Marshawney’s mother shares her story below.

"I am a stay-at-home mom, which includes being a Learning Coach to our two children. Our son Shamar had attended another online school, but it didn’t offer kindergarten for Marshawney, so we did research online for an online public chartered K–12 school they could both attend.

We chose Ohio Connections Academy because to us it was the best of all the things our family was looking for and needed, including the financial freedom of a public school, the one-on-one attention the children would get at an elite private school, and the comfort of attending school at home.

I am the kind of mother who would go to school with my children every day and be their personal assistant to help them. Of course, I could not do that in a bricks-and-mortar school. With OCA, however, I can go to school with my children every day. I know exactly what they are doing and who they are with.

I like the one-on-one personalized attention they receive. If my children or I need help, their OCA teachers are just a WebMail message or phone call away. OCA is also always making improvements. Connections Academy wants parent and student feedback, and they use that feedback to make the school better each year. They are connected, and that’s what I like about them.

Our children are extremely happy with their personal lives and their academics. Even though OCA is working for us, I still occasionally ask them if they would like to go to a traditional bricks-and-mortar school. The answer is always NO. You can’t get any more successful than that, especially with kids.

Marshawney has been on the honor roll. Due to her high reading level, she has been able to give five-minute talks in front of an audience of 100 or more in our local congregation. She is very involved with our family’s faith-based activities and is learning to play the piano. Every week, she also teaches a little girl her same age to read and study."

I like that OCA has LiveLesson® sessions. My favorite subjects are science, sign language, and art.
