Jessica Massey is a high school science teacher who joined North Carolina Connections Academy (NCCA) in 2016. She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in reading and literacy from State University of New York at Geneseo. Ms. Massey began her teaching career in Edenton, North Carolina in 2012. Below, she shares why she enjoys teaching at an online school like NCCA.
“I always loved helping people understand something that was once complicated. I enjoy getting students to that moment when the light bulb turns on. At NCCA, I can spend my time helping students grow and get them where they need to be, without having to worry about the other teacher responsibilities like bus or lunch duty.
When I taught at a traditional bricks-and-mortar school, it was always a struggle to make sure that every student in the classroom was being challenged. Now in an online learning environment, the students are in control of their learning. If they understand something, they can quickly move on—and if they don’t, they can spend more time on it.
This school offers a lot of great opportunities and benefits to our students; however, it involves responsibility, time management, and motivation on the student’s part, as well as on the parents’. NCCA encourages students to be responsible for their learning, which teaches them about accountability and prepares them for their future, whether it is college or the workforce.”
Aside from teaching, Ms. Massey loves traveling, hiking, and trying new restaurants with her husband.
