Connections Academy Celebrates Prolific Ice Skating Alums Headed to Pyeongchang
Four competing figure skaters are graduates of virtual school
Columbia, MD (Jan. 29, 2018) – Connections Academy shares the pride of the nation in celebrating California skating phenoms gaining worldwide attention on the rink: Mirai Nigasu, Karen Chen, Vincent Zhou and Nathan Chen will vie for gold medals in the weeks ahead. These four young athletes share the common thread as alumni of Connections Academy, a tuition-free online public school for students in grades K-12, offering a high-quality education that can be completed from anywhere with an internet connection.
In between hours of daily training, Connections Academy brings student athletes the education they need in a flexible manner. The ability to dedicate long, uninterrupted hours on the ice helped Mirai become one of two American women in ice skating history to land a triple axel at competition. Vincent Zhou maintained straight-As in part due to the flexibility to work ahead or spend additional time on materials.
“On behalf of Connections Academy, we want to congratulate Mirai, Karen, Vincent and Nathan. We are thrilled to celebrate them on their incredible accomplishments in figure skating,” said Connections Academy President Dr. Steven Guttentag. “Many athletes attend the virtual schools we support because they can complete their coursework around their strict training and competition schedules.”
For more than 15 years, Connections Academy tuition-free online public schools serving students in grades K-12, has provided students across the country access to an award-winning curriculum, certified teachers and one-on-one help with the flexibility to learn from anywhere with an internet connection. Some Connections Academy schools have already opened enrollment for the 2018-19 school year, and others will open enrollment soon.
Using technology tools and a rigorous curriculum, Connections Academy teachers work closely with students to develop an individualized learning plan that nurtures their strengths and provides additional support on more difficult subjects. The diverse student body includes competitive athletes, previously homeschooled students and students seeking expanded course offerings, among others.
“Flexibility is the advantage most cited of Connections Academy,” said Guttentag. “Not only can the curriculum be accessed so long as the student has an internet connection, but also students can complete their schoolwork on their own time. Our teachers and staff pride themselves on working together with busy students to complete their education.”
