BALTIMORE (April 24, 2015) – Connections Education, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable virtual education solutions for students in grades K–12, has been honored with multiple BESSIE Awards during ComputED Gazette’s 21st Annual Best Educational Software Awards program.

“We are honored to be recognized with three BESSIE Awards for our proprietary educational software in both STEM and Career Technical Education (CTE) related courses,” said Dr. Patricia Hoge, executive vice president of curriculum and instruction and chief academic officer for Connections Education. “Connections Education is committed to offering the best available resources for students to become college and career ready, and these awards acknowledge that dedication to quality and student learning. Like many schools across the country, Math has been a priority for Connections. Therefore to be awarded in this subject, and for a course we recently developed based on student performance data and learning sciences, is particularly rewarding.”

The 2015 Connections Education BESSIE Award winners are:

  • Algebra 1 – named best High School Algebra Website
  • Career Cluster of Business Management & Administration – named best High School Business Education Website
  • Science Club – named best Middle School Science Course Website

Connections Education’s Algebra 1 course focuses on math fundamentals such as expressions, equations and inequalities. Students learn how to utilize graphs, matrices, and factoring to identify, write, and solve multi-step problems. Divided into two sequences, Algebra 1A and 1B, the course integrates Teachlet® tutorials, animations, hands-on activities and a downloadable TI-Nspire™ Graphing Calculator within lessons to connect mathematical concepts to real-world applications. Algebra 1A also includes an introductory unit for students, designed to reduce math anxiety through study strategies, goal creation and a review of available resources.

The Algebra 1 course website was also extensively reviewed by the ComputED Gazette team, an additional honor.

Named best High School Business Education website, the Business Management & Administration Career Cluster includes five Career Technical Education (CTE) courses which give students an introductory understanding to the world of business. Courses include:

  • Introduction to Business – Students are introduced to the concepts, strategies and current issues of the U.S. and international business environment, including ethics, entrepreneurship, management, marketing, production, and financial elements.
  • Administrative Duties and Office Management – Students gain the skills and knowledge needed to run an administrative department of a medical office, such as receiving patients, handling medical records, and processing insurance claims.
  • Business Information Systems – Students are introduced to various information and communications technologies, and learn how information systems are used to solve problems and make business decisions.
  • Business Math – Students explore common business-related mathematical problems, such as profit and interest calculations, tax and insurance, financial statements, and stock market transactions.

An example of one of the many extra-curricular activities virtual school students can join and connect with fellow classmates, Connections Education’s Science Club, winner of the best Middle School Science Course Website, is available to middle school students throughout the nation interested in learning more about science and how it affects their lives and communities. Through LiveLesson® interactive presentations, Teachlet® tutorials and hands-on experiences, students in the Science Club design experiments, share findings with peers through message boards, and learn about science-related careers from industry professionals.

The BESSIE Awards recognize innovative and content-rich programs that provide parents and teachers with technology to foster educational excellence. Winning programs and websites are selected from publishers worldwide.
