As soon as she began at the school, Ms. Schroeder was struck by how closely the staff works together to support the students and their families. “We all genuinely care about each other,” she says, “and the families we serve.”
During a typical day, she spends much of her time working one-on-one with her students. Although she’s not with her students in person, Ms. Schroeder believes she can really get to know her students well – perhaps even better than she could in a traditional environment. “I feel that we forge closer relationships as a virtual school than we would in brick-and-mortar school.”
An important part of cultivating those relationships is getting to know each individual in her class “as a person and as a student.” In addition to the structured lessons, “I do a lot of ‘getting to know you’ activities,” Ms. Schroeder explains, constantly “encouraging students to share” something about themselves with their classmates.
