Trey
Middle School Student
Traditional schools weren’t a good fit for Trey. The rigid schedule didn’t work for him as a student—or for the responsibilities and commitments he had to his family. His mother Sarah researched a wide range of online schools, looking for both the scheduling flexibility Trey needed and the high-quality academic standards she wanted. Then they found Minnesota Connections Academy.
Flexibility and Support
For Trey, the difference was immediate. The flexibility of the academic curriculum at Minnesota Connections Academy means that he no longer has “to wake up at 6am.” He is able to focus on his schoolwork when he is ready, and is even able to adjust his schedule as needed. “I can choose when I want to do my lessons that day,” he explains.
His favorite subject is science. “He loves the experiments,” Sarah says. Trey also enjoys playing Kahoot games with classmates.
The biggest surprise, however, has been the individualized academic support that Minnesota Connections Academy provides. As in the traditional school environment, Trey works with his teachers during class. But he also meets frequently with teachers beyond normal class hours, whenever he needs extra help. This kind of regular one-on-one support had not been part of his prior experiences at traditional schools.
What I like most about Minnesota Connections Academy is the flexibility. I don't have to wake up at 6 am. I can choose when I want to do my lessons that day.

Commitment Beyond School
Trey is a diligent student, but also recognizes that he has important commitments beyond his academic studies. He takes part in a number of community-based activities. He enjoys spending time with his older sister and his younger brother, whether they are gaming or just “hanging out.”
Trey has an aunt with special needs. The flexibility offered by Minnesota Connections Academy enables him to be “an active part” of her life, which includes both day-to-day responsibilities and special events. This year, Sarah reports, Trey and his aunt “especially enjoyed walking trails at the Milford Mine together.”
Trey is thriving at Minnesota Connections Academy.
