Why I Became a Teacher

In 2016, after working in a factory for about six years, I started substitute teaching. I spent a lot of time in special education classrooms and fell in love with it. That’s when I decided to go back to school and get my master’s degree in special education. After graduation, I started looking for teaching positions in special education—and discovered Lighthouse Connections Academy.

One of the things I love most about teaching here is being able to build connections with students, families, and coworkers. Because of our online platform, I’m able to communicate more with them than if I were confined to one classroom all day. I feel that in our virtual environment, I can speak more directly with parents and individual students.

The Online School Experience at Lighthouse Connections Academy

One way I encourage students to engage with each other and with their lessons is through open discussion about their personal experiences. I then try to relate this to the lesson or skill we’ve learned in my class or in their general education class. This stimulates conversation among students and sometimes fosters their relationships outside of class. It also shows them I care and listen to what they have to say when they share their experiences.

I love seeing my students get excited about topics they don’t realize are related to our lesson or to a lesson they’ve learned in the past. When they make that connection, you can see their faces light up because they’re excited to see how real life and schoolwork can connect.

Message for Prospective Families Choosing Online School

This school enables students to learn in a way that works best for them and makes it easy for them to get the attention they may need. Students can meet with teachers in large groups, small groups, or one-on-one. Teachers are easily accessible, and there are live tutors available for tricky topics. Lighthouse Connections Academy is an amazing community to be part of—everyone is treated like family.

An education here helps prepare students for the future by allowing them to individualize their learning and by encouraging them to become independent and responsible for their own education. Students learn how to navigate our platform, giving them valuable skills for using other platforms or programs. In a world of expanding technology, being able to use multiple programs is a great skill to have for college and in many careers.

Hobbies and Interests

I love spending time with my husband and our two sons and three dogs. We enjoy taking the kids on fun activities, like the zoo, indoor playgrounds, splash pads, swimming, holiday events, and sporting events. We like to experience new things and be out and about when we can. We also enjoy our downtime at home doing nothing. I’m originally from Ohio, which makes us Cleveland fans of everything.
