Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Central Michigan University; Master of Educational Leadership, Grand Valley State University

Beth VanSluyters started teaching in 2016 and joined Lighthouse Connections Academy in 2020, where she teaches students in fourth grade. For Ms. VanSluyters, the most rewarding part of teaching here is having students from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances.

Why I Became a Teacher

I decided to become a teacher because I had so many amazing teachers as role models in my life. I loved learning and education, and it was because I had great teachers go out of their way to support me. I wanted to do that for others, so I decided to go into teaching!

I love learning about my students and what brought them to online education. They all have their own story that is as unique as they are and finding out their “why” makes me feel proud to be here. I love the flexibility of online learning. Students (and teachers) can take breaks as they see fit for themselves.

The Online School Experience at Lighthouse Connections Academy

I enjoy finding fun and creative ways to engage students in their learning. Some of my favorite moments are when we do LiveLesson® sessions and students get to turn on their cameras and play games with each other!

I also enjoy talking to my students about reading and reading with them. Reading is a huge passion of mine, and I know there is a right book out there for each student that will help them love reading, too! It’s my mission to find it with them.

“I really enjoy connecting with kids and feel like I’m able to connect with students who may have struggled in a traditional classroom.”

Message for Prospective Families Choosing Online School

Lighthouse Connections Academy enables students to become responsible for their own learning. They can make choices about how they want to learn and are encouraged to think about their education.

Hobbies and Interests

My favorite thing to do outside of work is to spend time with my family. My son is quickly growing, learning, and changing, and I never want to miss a moment. I love reading as much as I can get my hands on and running as often as I can. Being outside and traveling are also some of my favorite activities.
