Sean McMaugh

Sean McMaugh is a middle school teacher at TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA). He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in reading education from Florida International University. Mr. McMaugh is working toward a specialist degree in educational leadership as well. He shares his story below.

“I became a teacher because in the third grade I was bullied by a teacher whom I will never forget. My parents were going through a divorce at the time, and she made the experience ten times worse. I made a promise to myself on that day that I wanted to be a teacher so that I could ensure that every child who walked into my classroom was treated with dignity, respect, and kindness. It is also indescribable when you are able to witness that special moment when a child has learned something new in your presence—priceless!

I teach social studies and US history at TECCA. I love teaching at TECCA because the whole staff is like a family. We all treat each other with kindness and love and truly care about one another. TECCA has a very positive school culture and I think that filters into the way that the students are treated by the teachers. Lastly, the administration trusts that we are professionals and know how to do our job. They also understand that we know what is best for our students and trust our professional judgment.

In an online atmosphere, I feel that teachers can be much more creative because of the wonderful technology that is provided to help make lessons extremely interactive and hands-on. Also, I think that because of the way in which our online program has been developed and structured, the teachers are able to get to know their students on a much deeper level. I can honestly say that I know more about the students I teach in an online setting, than I would ever have known about the ones that I taught in a bricks-and-mortar school. I know so much about my students, from the way in which they prefer to write an essay, to the fact that they may love playing the piano as a hobby.

If you would like to see your child make impressive gains in his or her academics and emotional intelligence, and work with a team of educators who truly love working with children, then you should enroll in our school.”
