Jessica Hunter has been teaching since 2011 and joined TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA) as a middle school English language arts teacher in 2016. She currently holds a master’s degree in English and education and is working toward a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in administrative licensure. Below, Ms. Hunter shares what made her become a teacher and her passion for helping students thrive:
“I became a teacher because life at home was tough sometimes when I was a kid and there were not solid role models. However, when I would go to school, I had all of these positive role models who helped me learn right from wrong and taught me the life skills necessary to persevere and achieve my goals. I looked up to my teachers, and I became a teacher to pay it forward to a new generation by not only teaching skills in the subject that I am passionate about but also showing them how to reach success through a growth mind-set.
One benefit of teaching online is that it gives teachers, students, and families the flexibility they need to be able to meaningfully engage in school. What I mean is that we live in a society where activities and responsibilities are piling up on our plates every day and nothing is coming off. By making learning convenient and something that can happen from anywhere, it allows students to engage in their passions without sacrificing their learning and vice versa.
One thing that I would tell prospective parents as they are making the decision to enroll in our school would be to really take the time to engage with our platform, to learn it, to network with other families, to reach out to teachers, to ask questions, and to embrace the role of being a true partner in their student’s learning. Kids can do amazing things at TECCA, and it’s the support of not just the teachers but also the parents that helps students succeed in these endeavors.
TECCA is such a special community because we have shown that it is possible to have a social network in an online platform. The bond between teachers and families speaks for itself. In addition, the opportunities that TECCA provides for socialization in LiveLesson® sessions, field trips, clubs, and more allow students to connect and get together offline.
TECCA also helps students prepare for a bright and successful future not just by providing the platform for learning in a 21st century world but also by hiring teachers who understand that learning is evolving. Teachers at TECCA support students as they explore and learn, encouraging them to make mistakes and grow to move forward from them, to persevere, and eventually to reach their goals.”
In her free time, Ms. Hunter loves spending time outdoors hiking, walking, playing with her son, going on day trips, and seeking whatever adventure a given day has to offer. She also enjoys learning new activities and taking on household projects.
