Why I Became an Educator

I was raised in a working-class family—my parents did not attend college. They are hardworking people who made a lot of sacrifices to raise their family. My mother always talked about how her limited education prevented her from realizing her dreams, so she was especially committed to educating her children. Because of her dedication, I am proud to say that I am a first-generation college student. I know first-hand how a quality education can transform a person’s life. I want to pay-it-forward to our younger generations so that they, too, will have opportunities to realize their dreams and aspirations. For this reason, I have been in the field of education for 30 years and counting.

At Indiana Connections Academy, my favorite part of the job is to meet and interact with our school community. I feel great joy when we work together in ways that benefit our students. Also, my role requires me to be a life-long learner, which keeps my job fresh and interesting. I am always learning something new.

The Online School Experience at Indiana Connections Academy

Not only can our students choose a traditional or vocational pathway, but we also help to advance 21st Century skills, such as the development of self-agency and independent learning, digital literacy, collaboration, resourcefulness, and more. Also, as we continue to experience significant societal shifts such as an increase in remote work, Indiana Connections Academy students will be in a strong position to meet the demands of an evolving workplace that requires them to be proficient at completing projects and collaborating in virtual environments.

Developing an equitable and inclusive environment is very important to me. This has been a guiding principle throughout my career. I believe that the most successful schools are the ones where the families and educators work as partners to promote an effective and healthy learning environment for our youth.
