Learning Coach
In 2020, Brenda wasn’t even looking for a new school for her student. He wasn’t struggling. “It started with COVID,” Brenda explains. “My son’s charter school couldn’t handle the details well.” The family began looking for a school that was more experienced with online learning. What they found was a school that would change their student’s life.
“My son is excelling”
Right from the beginning, the approach at Great Lakes Learning Academy just clicked for Brenda’s student. The flexible curriculum has enabled him to learn at his own pace and on his own schedule. “My son is excelling,” Brenda reports. His grades have improved dramatically. She’s thrilled that he’s learning about so many new and different things, “even himself,” she adds.
In particular, Brenda’s student has gravitated toward subjects related to technology. She appreciates that “the school offers a lot of different courses,” allowing him to explore different areas of tech. He’s already leaning toward technology for his post-graduation studies. In the meantime, Great Lakes Learning Academy is assisting with dual enrollment at Washtenaw Community College. “He’s learning a lot,” says Brenda.
Role as Learning Coach.
Like many parents, Brenda initially didn’t know quite what to expect in her role as Learning Coach. At Great Lakes Learning Academy, she’s been supported every step of the way. The school provides a wide range of resources, including planning tools to stay on top of timeframes for submitting assignments.
And “don’t be afraid to ask questions,” she advises other parents. The teachers are available to talk through any issue, large or small, and have the flexibility to adapt to Learning Coaches’ schedules. “I like that meetings are available after my working hours,” Brenda says.
