Math Teacher

Cara Hubbell is a math teacher at Colorado Connections Academy. She began teaching in 2010 and joined Colorado Connections Academy for the 2015-16 school year. Mrs. Hubbell earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and German and her master’s degree in mathematics education from the University of California Santa Barbara. She shares more about her teaching journey below.

'I worked as a math tutor all through high school and college. I always loved math and I genuinely enjoyed helping others understand it. When I finished my BA, I realized teaching was my calling, so I entered UCSB’s master of education program and the rest is history!

Teaching at an online school means that I get to know my students surprisingly well! Even though I don’t know what any of my students look like, I know their hobbies, interests, strengths, and struggles. I mostly work one-on-one with them, which means that I can identify exactly what they need help with and how to get them to the next level of understanding. I have much closer relationships with my students here at Colorado Connections Academy than I ever did in a bricks-and-mortar school.

With a rigorous college-prep curriculum, our students are set up for success in their future, whether they choose to attend college or join the workforce. The school offers everything from AP classes to career and technical training classes. Students learn to be self-advocates at Colorado Connections Academy—they reach out to teachers regularly and learn to build professional relationships. Since our school is self-paced, students also learn to be responsible for their own time.

"I always loved math and I genuinely enjoyed helping others understand it. I love being a part of Colorado Connections Academy because our school is designed to meet the needs of such a wide variety of students."

— Ms. Hubbell

I am a rock climber and spend the majority of my time outside of school climbing rocks. Climbing has taken me all over Colorado, the United States, and even to other countries! I love climbing because it requires strength, technique, flexibility, problem solving, and communication. Since it is a two-person sport, you have to build a strong relationship with your climbing partner – your life is literally in their hands! Each semester I plan a rock climbing field trip for the students at Colorado Connections Academy so that I can share this passion with them. Most students who attend are trying climbing for the first time, and they always love it. Climb on!'
