Helping students succeed

With specialized training in developmental and educational psychology, our counselors are skilled at helping students address the personal, social, and academic issues that can affect their success in school and in life.

At CapoCA our counseling program is built on relationships, so our counselors are readily accessible to students and families—online, in-person, and by phone. With the additional support from our national Connections Academy office and its collaborative network of school counselors across the US, our counselors bring both individual attention and national expertise to our students and families.

Preparing students for college and career

Beyond their daily counseling activities, our counselors offer services designed to help high school students prepare for college and career with:

  • Personal Learning Plans focusing on post-graduation goals.

  • College test preparation courses for the SAT examinations.
  • One-on-one counseling with seniors to provide resources and assistance with postsecondary planning, including: career options, vocational training, and selecting the right college.
  • A High School Advisory Team consisting of 3 High School Advisory Teachers, Manager of Counseling Services as well as the Assistant Principal High School works with students and families to provide academic advice and counseling to help students achieve their goals; both academically and professionally.
Meet Penny Reeves

Penny ReevesPenny Reeves, Manager of Counseling Services, joined CapoCA bringing with her extensive school counseling experience at every level – elementary, middle, and high school. She holds a B.S. from San Diego State University.

Penny’s role at CapoCA allows her to develop relationships with each student to recommend classes for all our students, based on prior academic history, graduation needs, as well as students goals post high school. She actively tracks students’ progress; developing four year plans for graduation, as well as intervention programs to assist students that are having difficulty in classes. Penny also educates families as to graduation requirements, college admissions and planning, as well as the college application process. We have had students accepted to many colleges; examples of a few include United States Air Force Academy, NYU, University of British Columbia, UCI, UC Riverside, UCLA, San Francisco State, Chico State, Cal State Northridge. Additionally, Penny worked with the UC system, Articulation and Eligibility Academic Affairs office, which lead to our core curriculum being UC a-g approved fall 2010.

Penny is a strong supporter of our students and online education, saying, "I love CapoCA because I really do believe that our schools are at the forefront of future education. We have the ability, as academic advisors, to tailor each students schedule to their personal needs. There is a lot of flexibility with our program which allows students to grow and achieve at their own level and rate. I am impressed with the breadth of curriculum offered to our students; from AP classes to Honors, Standard and Basic. Students are encouraged to develop a love of education and to further their own education at community colleges as well. Students are able to take responsibility for their education and demonstrate that through their daily work habits. These are truly skills that will serve them well in the future; whichever path they chose to follow."
