Special Education Teacher

Laura Smith is a special education teacher at Wyoming Connections Academy (WYCA). Ms. Smith started at WYCA in 2016. She received her AA in elementary education from Eastern Wyoming College, her AS in general studies with a focus on technology from Eastern Wyoming College, her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming, and her master’s degree in special education from Western Governors University. She shares her story below:

Why I Became a Teacher

I knew I wanted to work with kids. This decision was inspired by my late grandmother who was a teacher. I also had a couple of amazing teachers when I was in school who were truly inspirational.

I love teaching at WYCA because of the flexibility it provides for students. Students can stand, jump, move, lie down, or sit comfortably while they are working on their schoolwork. I also love that I get to build connections not only with my students but also with their families, which is something I didn’t get to do in the brick-and-mortar setting. I enjoy being able to work with students one-on-one when they need it. Kids here don’t get lost as easily as students in brick-and-mortar settings because there are multiple people watching out for them all the time! Students have so much support in this setting, and they know that we are just a WebMail or phone call away.

"The team we have here at WYCA creates a setting that you can't find anywhere else! We all enjoy what we do and strive to help our students do their very best."

The Online School Experience at Wyoming Connections Academy

An education at WYCA helps prepare our students for a successful future by providing unique opportunities for them to connect with other students around the state. It also prepares them for a world of technology. Our curriculum is more challenging than what I have seen in local brick-and-mortar schools, which gives our students a chance to excel.

Message for Families Considering Online School

One thing that I would tell a prospective parent as they are making the decision to enroll in our school is that this setting is best for parents who want to be involved in their child’s education. It is up to you to make sure your students are completing lessons, taking their time, and doing what is asked of them. Also, please stay in contact with teachers and ensure that your child is staying in contact as well. Staying in contact is a huge factor for success in this setting! We enjoy talking to you and your student!

Hobbies and Interests

In my personal time I am a very busy person! I am a Girl Scout leader for a troop of seven Juniors and Cadettes. I provide child care, mentoring, and tutoring services for our local Department of Family Services office, and I enjoy spending time with kids who are in foster care. I also love to spend time with my family, travel, go to concerts, attend comedy shows, and work on art projects.
