Graduate student, Afeefah, attended Ohio Connections Academy from the second grade through high school. During her 10 years at the school, Afeefah most appreciated the flexibility that came with at-home learning and the ability to work at her own pace.
From Homeschool to Online
Afeefah believes the biggest advantage that Ohio Connections Academy offered was the personalized attention students received from teachers and tutors when they were struggling with the material or just needed some extra help.
“What I liked best about Ohio Connections Academy was the flexibility and ability to customize a learning schedule and pace, allowing me to work around other activities,” she reported.
Prior to enrolling in Ohio Connections Academy, Afeefah was homeschooled, so she never attended a brick-and-mortar school. However, she believes that through the flexibility Ohio Connections Academy provided, she had more time to volunteer in the community, where she helped distribute meals to people in need. She was also able to be more active in her local mosque and assist with various charitable causes.
Prepared for the Future
Academically, the flexibility also afforded Afeefah the opportunity to take college courses through the state’s College Credit Plus program, which she says gave her a head start in college, allowing her to save both time and money.
The support Afeefah received from her school counselor helped her determine her post-high school plans and create a roadmap toward achieving them. After graduation, she enrolled in a community college and pursued a major in dental hygiene.
