K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher

Bachelor’s Degree, Elementary Education, University of Northern Iowa; Master’s Degree, English as a Second Language, Morningside University

Emily Rohret started teaching in 2016 and joined Iowa Connections Academy in 2023. She is an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher for students in grades K-12.

Why She Became a Teacher

According to Ms. Rohret, “My third-grade teacher, Mrs. O’Brien, made me want to become a teacher. She created a welcoming and safe environment, made learning fun and engaging, and made sure to let us know how much she cared for each of us.”

Her favorite part of teaching at our school is “getting to know and work with so many students around the state of Iowa, learning about their experiences and backgrounds, and getting to help them grow through engaging activities and fun online.”

The Online School Experience at Iowa Connections Academy

Ms. Rohret’s favorite classroom activity is morning meetings. “This gives teachers the chance to get to know their students’ interests and talk about their day — and it’s a chance for students to get to know you as the teacher.

“[I also enjoy] virtual field trips. They’re such a neat and special thing. . . . We visited the Field Museum in Chicago and the students learned so much about Sue, the dinosaur, and about their habitats, diets, etc.”

Message for Families Interested in Online School

If there’s one thing Ms. Rohret would tell parents thinking of enrolling a child in this school, it’s that “we will do everything in our power to help your child grow academically, socially, and emotionally and to truly enjoy school and learning.

“Iowa Connections Academy not only gives students an opportunity to learn and connect with others through [technology], but it also gives them a chance to explore what they are interested in and prepare them to be 21st century learners.”

The world is becoming surrounded by technology. Iowa Connections Academy [does a great job] of preparing students for this.
