Thanette Short is a teacher at California Connections Academy. She also enrolled her own children in the school. Ms. Short began teaching in 2009 and joined California Connections Academy in 2013. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Chapman University and master's degree in educational administration from California State University. Ms. Short shares more about her story below.
"I decided to become a teacher after teaching my cousin to dive in our grandmother’s pool. I loved seeing his excitement at mastering this new skill. Then, in my senior year of high school, I was able to take a class that involved working in a daycare center. We rotated teaching lessons, assisting with lessons, and making observations behind a mirrored glass. After that experience, I knew teaching was the career I wanted.
I love teaching at California Connections Academy because of the personal relationships I am able to create with families. The school community is special because students have the ability to learn and participate at a level that is most comfortable for them. Students can also connect with other students from all over the state who share their interests through the many clubs and activities that the school offers.
One benefit of teaching at an online school is that I have the ability to work with students one-on-one, so I can really get to know their abilities and adjust lessons to fit those abilities. Another benefit is being able to really collaborate with other teachers. This collaboration allows us the ability to grow as teachers, which benefits our students.
An education at California Connections Academy helps prepare students for a successful future because it teaches them independence and personal responsibility in learning. Students are also able to choose from a wide-range of courses. There is no need to skip out on courses such as science, social studies, and art—this allows our students to be well rounded in their education.
If there was one thing that I would tell a prospective parent, it would be to make sure to set up a designated learning area in your home, and be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the new schedule."
Outside of teaching, Ms. Short enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, reading, doing arts and crafts, gardening, and spending time with her daughters.
