Learning Coach

Sarah Waite is a mother of 10 children. Her family lives in Powell, Wyoming, where she acts as Learning Coach for her five youngest, all students at Wyoming Connections Academy (WYCA). Sarah shares her family’s story below.

“I am a stay-at-home mom of 10 children. I love being a wife and mother. We sent our older children to traditional bricks-and-mortar schools, but I just missed having them at home. I am grateful for the opportunity that Connections Academy provides for me to have my five younger children at home. I love learning with them.

I first heard of Connections Academy from a magazine. I checked into it because it seemed like a good fit for our family. I was interested in WYCA because of all the extras it provides. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available in Wyoming at that time. I was so glad when it became an option for our family.

I have been so grateful for the insight and understanding that the teachers at WYCA have given our family. They want to see our children succeed, and they are there to help make it happen.

For us, the flexibility Connections Academy provides works well. I am grateful that we can work ahead or have some time to catch up, if needed. One of my children loves to get up and start his school day early, so he can do what he wants later. I like that he can do his schoolwork when it is good for him. My children also love the clubs and activities.

I think that the teachers at WYCA are wonderful, and I love the support they give us. They are so good to listen to concerns and help in any way they can. I like the fact that the teachers are always available to answer questions and help our children. I like having someone else making the assignments. I am grateful for the help the teachers are always willing to give to our children.

The biggest success we have seen with WYCA is the confidence our children have gained. One of our daughters didn’t have much confidence in herself academically, but this year she was invited to be in two Honors classes because of how much she had improved. The teachers recognized the effort she was putting into her classes. Our children have also gotten better about doing assignments and not falling behind. I have enjoyed seeing them take more of the responsibility for getting things done and turned in on time. They are learning to manage their time.

I would tell any parent considering enrolling in WYCA, ‘You can do it!’ You can be a good Learning Coach for your children; the school staff is there to support and help you. They are so good! I have been so grateful for the insight and understanding that the teachers at WYCA have given our family. They want to see our children succeed, and they are there to help make it happen. It can be so rewarding to learn with your children—that is my favorite thing about having our children do their school at home.”
