Why I Decided to Become a Teacher

My path to teaching wasn’t a straight one. After college, I had the opportunity to do marketing for a political campaign, which I enjoyed. However, I had spent previous summers working at camps, and something felt right when I was working with students. I realized I missed it, and decided to change course and pursue that passion.

Even in the brick-and-mortar schools where I worked, I embraced the potential of online learning and established classroom models that used technology. When I saw that Connections Academy® was coming to Virginia, I knew it would be a great fit.

The Online School Program Experience at Virginia Connections Academy

At this school, students are encouraged to develop critical time management and communication skills that are essential to success in today’s world. Teaching online allows me to meet students where they are. I enjoy logging in to face-to-face LiveLesson® sessions knowing I have students who are excited to attend that day!

Connections Academy students benefit from working at their own pace, while still having the opportunity to interact with their teachers and classmates both inside the classroom and through field trips and activities.

I like to bring real-world scenarios into teaching. My students have written letters to their state representatives, taken field trips to sit in on state and national legislative sessions, and had the opportunity to talk with a journalist covering current events across the country.

“I love teaching at this school because I can watch students build a sense of independence and confidence.”

My Personal Interests

Outside of my classroom, I love an adventure! I have a passion for travel and have had many amazing experiences, such as spending a day with elephants in Thailand, scuba diving with sharks in the Great Blue Hole, exploring Mayan ruins in Belize, and rappelling down waterfalls in Costa Rica. I also love to read and do crafts. One of my favorite books at the moment is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I highly recommend it.
