Billy Patterson began teaching in 2010 and started teaching at Tennessee Connections Academy in 2021. He currently teaches math to eighth grade students.
Why I Became a Teacher
Ever since I was in kindergarten, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My greatest joy in life is helping others and teaching them. I love being part of a child’s education and showing all students that they can learn and be successful. I’ve been in education for 12 years, with experience teaching first and third grades before joining Connections Academy.
I foster student engagement by keeping an ongoing and open line of communication. Building relationships with students and families and staying in continual communication helps keep students on track. It also helps keep me aware of any difficulties students may be experiencing so I can schedule additional LiveLesson® session times with them. Student interaction is encouraged by giving them time to chat before class begins and by using breakout rooms for learning activities.
My favorite classroom activity is using the poll pod and asking how they are feeling for the day. I enjoy this startup activity because it gives students a chance to share how they’re feeling and lets me know how their day is going. It shows them I care about them, and if they are having a bad day, I can offer encouragement and positivity.
The most rewarding part is getting to work with the best teachers and a diverse group of students from across the state! It’s also great for students to interact with a wide range of other children their age.

Message for Families Considering Online School
An education at Tennessee Connections Academy helps prepare students for a bright and successful future by offering them a high-quality, rigorous curriculum. It gives them the opportunity to learn self-discipline. Students work through the lessons at their own pace but also have the planner to follow to help keep them on track. This gives them the chance to learn how to manage their time and how to plan and complete important tasks. Being organized and self-disciplined is needed for success in today’s world.
I highly recommend Tennessee Connections Academy. It’s an outstanding school and innovative program. It offers flexibility, backed by a structural foundation. The program is wonderful for many families!
