Why I Became a Teacher

I started my official teaching career in 2015. Prior to that, I volunteered several times in the classroom, starting when I was in high school. I have always enjoyed working with students and providing a positive influence and learning environment for them. Since I was a child, I knew my purpose was to work with children in the education setting.

I’m passionate about encouraging my students toward their goals to help make sure they are successful in their endeavors and development. It’s a purpose of mine to help in enriching our youth and guiding them to make sound decisions. The most rewarding part of my work is when students who are faced with obstacles in a brick- and-mortar school can come to Tennessee Connections Academy and learn from educators in a loving and caring school environment. Our school is student centered and focuses on bringing the best out of each student.

The Online School Experience at Tennessee Connections Academy

I enjoy building relationships with not only the students but also the parents. That’s a huge benefit of online school. I like being able to have the flexibility and time to meet with my students one-on-one and give them the undivided attention that may be needed. I love that they are in a safe environment, where they can be themselves and feel appreciated. Having the availability to be the support that students and parents need is a rewarding part of my work.

I enjoy finding innovative ways to engage my students through online learning. Using Nearpod and other interactive resources allows me to gamify the lesson to get my students more engaged. My favorite classroom activity is doing a virtual escape room with my students. It’s fun seeing them using their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to complete the escape with their classmates.

I strive to be a pillar of support for all my students, to encourage them to reach their full potential and goals.— Ms. Walker

Message for Families Considering Online School

Education at Tennessee Connections Academy empowers students with the 21st-century skills necessary for today’s society. Students will become independent thinkers and be provided with a student-centered education. This will teach them the soft skills needed in preparation for whatever avenue they choose after high school.

They won’t be disappointed with the attention and care provided by the teachers. Students will be able to get one-on-one help when needed. This has been one of the best education environments I’ve worked in throughout my career in education.

Hobbies and Interests

I’m a mother of three boys, and I love to spend time with my family playing board games, video games, and attending football games. I enjoy whitewater rafting, swimming, crafting, reading, and baking. I am a first-generation college student. My mother pushed me to be my best throughout my childhood. Being the first of my siblings to attend college wasn’t an easy task, and I worked two jobs while putting myself through undergraduate school. Challenges in life shape you into an amazing individual. This is one of the main reasons I chose to teach high school. It may not always be easy, but I want to be that person in the corner for the students who may not have someone else. I strive to be a pillar of support for all my students, to encourage them to reach their full potential and goals.
