Ed., Educational Administration, University of Scranton; Instructional Technology Specialist Certification, Robert Morris University; Post-Master’s Executive Certificate in Leadership and Management, University of Notre Dame

Before Mr. Micco was an educator, he was a chemist at a metals company. But in 2003, the scientist became a science teacher, working at several traditional brick-and-mortar schools. He made the switch to online education in 2011, at first continuing as a science teacher before moving into his current role in the school’s administration.

A Welcoming Community

Pennwood Cyber Charter School offers a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes college and career readiness. Mr. Micco explains that the school’s high academic standards are paired with personalized learning plans and a flexible learning environment, built on the understanding that each student has unique strengths and unique needs.

It all begins by “creating a welcoming community,” Mr. Micco says. “We want to ensure that all students, staff, and families feel valued, respected, and supported.”

The school is proactive about implementing inclusive policies and community-building activities. But a positive, accessible learning environment is also built through relationships. “My favorite part of the job,” he says, “is building relationships with students, families and our staff.” Mr. Micco enjoys getting to know everyone, “not only in the school setting, but outside the school’s (virtual) walls.”

Immeasurable Rewards

It was Mr. Micco’s “love for learning” that initially attracted him to a career as a professional educator. What drives him, however, is “a desire to make a difference, and a commitment to nurturing the potential in every student.”

It isn’t always easy. He says that helping to run a school brings continuous, often unexpected challenges, “but the rewards are immeasurable.” As an educator, Mr. Micco explains that because the purpose of his career is so clear – and so important – he never has trouble finding his daily motivation. “I aim to inspire the next generation,” he says, “to pursue their passions, achieve their dreams, and contribute positively to society.”

“Pennwood Cyber Charter School ensures students are equipped [to have] success in higher education, careers, and life.”
