High School

Sadie Morgan is a freshman at Michigan Connections Academy and is the youngest person and first female to participate in the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s Fire Youth Academy. Go Sadie, you make us proud!

Sadie had a feeling she wanted to be a firefighter way back when she was in kindergarten. Although she’s not a firefighter yet, she has completed the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s Fire Youth Academy — and is the youngest person and first female to have done so.

The weeklong program allows students to learn search and rescue drills, use fire hoses and extinguishers, and practice hands-only CPR. It also allows young women to get a brief glimpse into what firefighting is like and decide if they want to keep it on their list of potential career paths.

What’s next for Sadie? She plans to keep attending the Fire Youth Academy until she ages out at 18. According to Sadie’s mother, “She will continue this heart of love for others. . . . Public service will definitely be in her path, whatever route she chooses.”

“I could see myself [being] there on someone’s worst day, helping them through it, coaching them through it, reassuring them that things are going to be OK.”
