Marla Bowie is the elementary school principal for grades 3–5 at Georgia Connections Academy. After more than a decade at the school in classroom, instructional support, school improvement, data, federal programs, engagement, and marketing roles, she now brings that experience closer to the students and teachers at Georgia Connections Academy.
Why She Became an Educator
I became an educator because of my mother and because of what my parents did for me. My mother, a physical education teacher, was my model. She was forceful but loving, caring, and kind, and she treated her students like her own children. I did not just watch her do a job. I watched a way of showing up for children, and it became the blueprint for how I lead today.
I also know what it means to have people in your corner. My parents made sure I never fell through the cracks, even when I could not have named what I needed. That experience taught me that a child’s path is shaped by the adults who choose to show up, and that not every child has someone doing that for them. That is my why. Every child deserves someone in their corner.
After more than a decade at Georgia Connections Academy in federal programs, engagement, and marketing, I wanted to make a difference in a different way. Stepping into the principal role brought me closer to the students and teachers at the heart of the work. The reason I said yes is the same reason I walked into education in the first place.

The Online School Experience at Georgia Connections Academy
Georgia Connections Academy gives families a front-row seat to their child’s education. A parent or guardian serves as the Learning Coach, partnering directly with certified teachers to support the student’s day. Families can see the lessons their child is working through, understand where the child is strong or struggling in real time, and become true partners in the work.
This is real teaching with real accountability. Certified Georgia teachers deliver instruction, hold live lessons, monitor progress, and step in when a student needs help. Georgia Connections Academy follows the state curriculum, and students take the same state assessments as other Georgia public school students.
Advice for New Online Families
Families should consider the fit for their child specifically. A student who needs more challenge, more support, or simply a closer partnership between home and school can thrive in this setting. The common thread is an adult at home who is ready to be part of it. I encourage families to reach out, ask direct questions, and picture their own child and their own role inside the school day before deciding.
I am looking forward to this school year and to rising strong alongside our students, families, and staff.
