California Online Elementary School Curriculum

Young minds require a solid foundation of knowledge to support future learning. In grades K–5, our free online elementary school program helps young students learn the basics, acquire study skills, and develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime. California Connections Academy’s online elementary curriculum stresses the fundamentals, and students focus on the core subjects: reading, writing, science, math, and social studies.

Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional kindergarten is an exciting educational opportunity for children who have birthdays between September 2 and December 2. Bridging preschool and kindergarten, a transitional kindergarten year helps ensure these children enter kindergarten with the maturity, confidence, and skills they need to excel.

This statewide program was created by the 2010 California law called the Kindergarten Readiness Act. Children benefit from a developmentally appropriate curriculum taught by credentialed teachers who help them build a strong foundation for future school success.

  • Students attend during the regular school year and learn a modified version of the kindergarten curriculum.
  • Students do 2–3 lessons a day, which will take approximately 2–3 hours.
  • LiveLesson® sessions are held once a week for approximately 45 minutes.
  • Students receive the regular kindergarten materials.
  • Students are assessed every two weeks; the curriculum is flexible, so it can be modified to meet a child’s individual needs.
  • Physical education is not required but is an option.

"Best of Class" Materials

California Connections Academy’s online elementary school curriculum brings together "best of class" materials from leading educational publishers and other content providers. We provide all the texts, lesson plans, and materials—everything you need for a high-quality learning experience at home.

The Gifted and Talented Program

The online Gifted and Talented program for elementary school students is available for students who qualify, beginning in third grade. When appropriate, advanced younger students may have the opportunity to enroll in these online courses or work at a higher grade level.

Most elementary school curriculum content for the younger grades is in print, supplemented with online content. As your student advances through virtual elementary school, more of the content is delivered online but is still supported by printed materials.
