Manager of Counseling Services

BA in management with a minor in sociology from Wittenberg University, MA in school counseling from the University of Detroit-Mercy

Melissa Norman-Dunton is the manager of counseling services at Michigan Connections Academy (MICA). After college, Ms. Norman-Dunton volunteered in Detroit with AmeriCorps where she worked with young adults and developed after-school tutoring programs, clubs, and workshops. It was during that time that she decided to become a school counselor.

Ms. Norman-Dunton joined MICA in the 2013–14 school year. She says, "The biggest difference between a school counselor at a bricks-and-mortar school and one at an online school is that an online school counselor is able to develop deep and meaningful relationships with students and parents. At MICA, our teachers can get to know our students and families on a personal basis. This 'insider information' allows our counselors to be proactive when creating guidance lessons to teach students coping skills, study skills, or to provide guidance to achieve personalized post-secondary options."
