Does Connections Academy provide services and accommodations for students with disabilities?
For students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Connections Academy provides a continuum of virtual special education services that range from consultation, curriculum accommodation and modification, collaboration with learning coaches and general education teachers, to virtual direct instruction. Connections Academy provides students with IEPs with related services, that may include virtual speech language and virtual occupational therapy, as determined by the IEP team. For eligible students with disabilities who do not require special education, Connections Academy develops (as needed) and implements Section 504 plans that detail appropriate accommodations and modifications.
How does Georgia Connections Academy support students with disabilities?
Federal law requires Georgia Connections Academy to provide its students, regardless of disability, with an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from the school’s education program. We provide students with accessibility through resources tailored to each student’s individual abilities and needs, including assistive technologies and individualized support. Does Georgia Connections Academy have a physical office with teachers present?
Yes, Georgia Connections Academy has a
teaching center and administrative office where highly skilled and qualified teachers provide virtual instruction to students every day.
How many hours per week must my student be involved with schoolwork?
Georgia State Law requires every student to meet required instructional hours of:
- Grade 5: 900 hours per year. Based on a five-day work-week, 5 hours per day, or 25 hours per week
- Grades 6–12: 990 hours per year. Based on a five-day work-week, 5.5 hours per day, or 27.5 hours per week
Will my student spend all of his/her time in front of a computer?
No. Many lessons will be completed on the computer, but others involve time reading while away from the computer, or completing science experiments in a kitchen or other room.
What if my student is suspended or expelled from a previous school?
Georgia Connections Academy cannot enroll any students who are currently under terms of suspension or expulsion from their schools.
Will my family be able to meet and interact with other families?
Yes, Georgia Connections Academy encourages families to meet in order to share common experiences and learning tips to help foster
socialization and community.
Will my student have to take standardized tests?
Yes, public schools in Georgia are required by law to take all standardized tests such as the Georgia Milestones End of Course Test, Georgia Milestones End of Grade Test, G-Kids, and any additional state mandated tests required for your student. Additional state mandated tests required for your student could include assessments for English Language Learners (ELL) or The Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA), depending on student's needs. Testing centers are set up across the state and families are assigned locations based on their physical address.
May I request information about the professional qualifications of my student’s teacher(s)?
In compliance with the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Georgia Connections Academy informs parents that you may request information about the professional qualifications of your student’s teacher(s). The following information may be requested:
- Whether the teacher has met the Georgia Professional standards Commission requirements for certification for the grade level and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;
- Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or other provisional status through which Georgia qualifications or certification criteria have been waived;
- The college major and any graduate certification or degree held by the teacher;
- Whether the student is provided services by paraprofessionals, and if so, their qualifications.

What services are available for students experiencing homelessness?
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements Act of 2001 ensures educational rights and protections for children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness by removing barriers to school enrollment and daily participation in school activities. Under this act, various living situations may be considered homelessness and may qualify the child, youth, or family for certain services.
