Ms. Sands is a school counselor, working with students K-8. She joined the Wyoming Connections Academy family in 2020. She shares more below.

Why I Became an Educator

"I had a lot of interests in college, but I knew I always wanted to work in education. I had wanted to be an English teacher for pretty much the entirety of my undergrad [years]. I met with one of my very favorite high school teachers for coffee the summer of my senior year of college, and she mentioned that I might make a good school counselor. I went to a school that didn’t have one, so I had no idea what that even entailed. I researched a little more and decided to give it a try—and I loved it! I did two years of an internship at all different levels in local schools near me, and then my first full year as a school counselor was spent working with special education students at the high-school level.

The Online School Experience

I love the way it’s set up: I was homeschooled myself from 1st grade through 8th grade and would have loved to be a part of something like this! I love working with families and students as they embark on their learning journey and being able to chat about things big and small over the phone or Zoom. The staff is amazing, and I love that I can work from home!A successful education at Wyoming Connections Academy means students demonstrate a ton of initiative, independence, and self-awareness. Students learn to ask for help when they need it and gain the skills they need to advocate for themselves and navigate difficult tasks. They also work on building relationships and conversation-building skills when attending LiveLesson® sessions or Zooms. These are skills that might not necessarily be taught in a brick-and-mortar school, but are part of the daily routine here at Wyoming Connections Academy.Wyoming Connections Academy services families across the state of Wyoming, and students come to us from all sorts of experiences. The Wyoming Connections community is special because through this program, we are able to come together and celebrate the differences and similarities we all share. It also gives students power over their own education, which is unique to this setting.

"There are so many opportunities and so many different things to do, create, and learn."

My Interests

I have a ton of hobbies that I pick up, put down, and then pick up again about 2 years later, but my constants are reading and being outside. I love to ride my bike and go on hikes. My favorite time of year is fall, when all the leaves start to turn. I live in Buffalo, New York, with my husband and my cat. I love anime, crime shows, and nachos.
