Mathias is a middle school student at Wisconsin Connections Academy (WCA). He lives in Gleason, Wisconsin with his brother Joshua, who is also a WCA student, and Caleb, a WCA graduate. At WCA, Mathias can work at a pace that suits his learning style. His mother shares his story below.
“While Mathias has struggled with reading, he has shown amazing improvement under the guidance of his great WCA teachers. They take time each week to call and read with him. They also enrolled him in great online programs, Raz-Kids and Headsprout. WCA has created a program called Reading for Success in which students who struggle with reading receive a book each week with various activities. They then attend two live lesson sessions each week in a small-group setting, where they are able to get one-on-one help from their teacher. Mathias now enjoys reading and has begun the Harry Potter series. Sometimes, if he has a case of the “wiggles” and is unable to focus, he has the flexibility to take a break, go outside, participate in physical education, or work on an art project.
In his spare time, Mathias enjoys playing video games, biking, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and spending time with friends and family.
Mathias’ favorite subjects are science and social studies. He especially loves the great science experiments in his science class.
Mathias hasn’t decided what he wants to do when he grows up, but he has narrowed it down to a video game designer, writer, or veterinarian.”
The WCA program has offered him the flexibility to work in shorter intervals when his attention is more focused.
