Shelby Jupiter is a high school English language arts teacher at wa. She began teaching in 2013 and joined Pacific Northwest Connections Academy in 2019. She received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from Gonzaga University. She shares more about her experience below:

“I have always wanted to be a teacher. When I was traveling overseas, I remembered that passion while living in a rural village of Fiji. My Fijian sisters dreamed of coming to the United States to go to school, so I helped teach them English. Seeing them so excited to learn reminded me why I love to teach.

I love being able to work one-on-one with students at Pacific Northwest Connections Academy. It helps me be able to build relationships with my students and families and to best work with each of them with their educational journey and goals.

Unlike in a brick-and-mortar school, I have time to work more individually with students to better assist them with their schoolwork. I am also able to know more about my students in this online format because I am not limited to talking about my class subject. Because of our online format, I can help students on a more well-rounded basis and answer questions that pertain to their overall success at Pacific Northwest Connections Academy.

Students who are successful at Pacific Northwest Connections Academy are prepared for any future they may be interested in because of our diverse classes and our emphasis on students taking ownership of their education. Pacific Northwest Connections Academy is such a special community because of communication. We have more personal and meaningful conversations with our families, which builds a close-knit community. We also are able to connect with our students, their Learning Coaches, and their siblings and friends on field trips and at other social events with our school.

I would tell parents that because we are on online school, we have a community-based approach to their student’s learning. It takes the teachers to help students through the content, the Learning Coaches to monitor student work and school habits, and the students to take control of their learning and be proactive in working with their Learning Coach and teachers. This is a very positive and supportive environment with so many resources if students are seeking out the help and answers they need to be successful.

When I am not teaching, I can be found hanging out with my dog, Scoobert, playing video games, or baking. I like to rock climb, listen to music, and read!”

I love being able to work one-on-one with students at Pacific Northwest Connections Academy.
