Olivia Neill

SCCA student Olivia doing gymnastics

Olivia is a middle school student at South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA). She is a competitive gymnast who likes that at SCCA, she has time to train and spend time with her family outside of her schoolwork. Read below for more of Olivia’s story.

“I became interested in SCCA because I wanted to make sure that I would be academically ready for college. My relationship with my teachers has been quite unique compared to my previous bricks-and-mortar schools. Up until fourth grade, I attended traditional public schools and always had one teacher. Since becoming a Connections Academy student, I have many teachers who are available to me. My teachers have all been on hand to answer questions and offer their help whenever needed. They were also very concerned with my personal health when I suffered an injury.

My favorite subject is English. I have always enjoyed reading, and it has been interesting to read stories that have been assigned instead of only things that I have chosen. I particularly like to see what my grades are as soon as I complete my assessments and tests. Those grades help me to know what I need to improve on before I move on to another assignment. When my teachers comment about my work it encourages me to work harder to improve. I also like that my teachers don’t get frustrated with me when I don’t understand assignments, and they give me opportunities to improve my grades.

I love gymnastics and have been competing since I was six years old. In order to train with a former Czechoslovakian Olympic gymnast, I have to travel for two hours each day. SCCA gives me the flexibility to complete my school assignments in the car or whenever I am not training. My schedule also allows me the freedom to travel to competitions without missing school. I am able to spend more time with my family instead of having to spend all of my time outside of the gym in a school.

I enjoy spending time with my friends: shopping, having sleepovers, and going to the lake. I keep in touch with my closest friends through texting, phone calls, and social media. I usually have a friend overnight at least once each weekend when I don’t have a gymnastics competition. However, most of my friends are gymnasts, so I get to see them almost every day.

My plans for the future are to hopefully compete on a college gymnastics team and then to continue on to dental school to become an orthodontist.”
