Mr. Diminick

Joseph P. Diminick

Director of Specialized Programs

Bachelor’s Degree, Literature, U.S. Military Academy at West Point; MBA, Information Systems, Oklahoma City University; Master’s Degree, National Security Studies, Army War College; Master’s Degree, Philosophy, University of Illinois; Ph.D. (in progress), University of Illinois

Mr. Diminick took a unique path to a career as a professional educator. It is actually his second career, after more than three decades of distinguished military service. It was an unexpected development. “Jumping into the world of education,” he says, “was not planned.” However, after serving as both an instructor and a professor during his uniformed tenure, moving into the field of education “seemed like a natural transition.”

Seeing Their Eyes Light Up

Though Mr. Diminick had significant teaching experience during his time in the military, it was his experience as a parent that motivated his decision. Coaching his own children in various sports, he explains, “initially kindled the desire to teach and educate.” His favorite part about teaching?  “Watching a student’s eyes light up once they grasp a concept, make a discovery, or simply experience the joy of learning.”

Since his retirement from the Army in 2015, Mr. Diminick has held positions as an English teacher, an upper school principal, and an instructor for JROTC. He has also taught personal finance. In addition to his responsibilities at Pennwood Cyber Charter School, he is currently the head coach for both the boy’s and girl’s tennis teams at a school in the area.

Preparing Students for College or Career

At Pennwood, Mr. Diminick serves as the director of specialized programs, with an emphasis on C-Term and Career Readiness. What that really means, he explains, is “helping students discover their passions.” After many years of mentoring and guiding young people, Mr. Diminick is able to work with students “to establish life goals, and prepare for college,” he says, “or a career after high school.”

Mr. Diminick retired from the U.S. military with a rank of colonel, having earned numerous awards and decorations throughout a distinguished 33-year career. He and his wife Jodi have four children and six grandchildren.
