Summerstar Gonzalez is an elementary school student at Pecos Connections Academy (PCA). She lives with her family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since enrolling, Summerstar has enjoyed exploring her many interests. She shares more of her story below.
"This is my first year at PCA. My parents decided to try schooling from home this year, and I think it was a good choice. My passion is rock climbing, and PCA allows me to practice climbing more. I am on a rock climbing team called Team Mojo, and my dream is to become a professional rock climber. We climb every day, but on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I have rock climbing practice from 4:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Being schooled at home has given me more time to train so I can reach my dream.
My favorite subjects are art and social studies. I like art because it’s so much fun to draw! When I see art or a cool drawing on the internet, I can’t wait to try to replicate it in my sketch book. And I like social studies because I like to read about society and the past.
I really enjoy participating in LiveLesson sessions with my teachers because I feel like we have a good bond. I stay connected with friends through texting and Roblox. We play on Roblox together when we are all online.
PCA is different from traditional public schools because we study at home and I can do my lessons when I want. At a traditional public school, we didn’t have very tasty lunches, and breaks were at certain times. With PCA, we can have snacks and take breaks at any time.
What I like most about PCA is that I get to work at my own pace. And the LiveLesson sessions are cool because I can see and talk with my teachers. They give me really useful advice to help me learn."
