ORCA teacher Ms Hammer

Rebecca Hammer is an elementary school teacher at Oregon Connections Academy (ORCA). She has more than 20 years of teaching experience, starting her teaching career in 1994. She has been teaching with ORCA since 2005. She holds a master of arts in early childhood education at Western Oregon State University. In addition, Ms. Hammer holds a master's in counseling (focusing on children and adolescents) from Western Baptist Seminary. Ms. Hammer explains why she wanted to become a teacher below.

“I did an internship in college in the local classrooms, and after that I was hooked. I love working with the kids and seeing the 'light' come on when they learn and understand a concept. I also enjoy finding new ways to engage and excite learners. I truly like working with other colleagues to help make Connections Academy a positive learning experience for all students. We work together as a team to do what is best for each student.

I appreciate the challenge of teaching via computer, as well as really getting to know my students and their Learning Coaches. Everyone in the program wants their children to learn and is actively involved in the education process. I just love watching or hearing about the moment when a student gets a concept! It is so much fun.

One of the biggest benefits of teaching at on online school is that I can focus on instruction and not spend a majority of my time on classroom management. I can also work with struggling students who are able to get extra help without having to miss social studies or science instruction.

This is a great school for parents who want to be involved in their student’s education and are willing to put in the time and effort to help their student succeed. The academics are challenging, but students really grasp the material, and do not end up skipping concepts due to teacher weaknesses or lack of time. This setting also works well for self-motivated students who are involved in extracurricular activities that do not fit into the schedule of the traditional school.”

I truly enjoy working with colleagues to help make Connections Academy a positive learning experience for all students. We work together as a team to do what is best for each student.
