“I decided to become a teacher when I was 11 years old. I realized the joy that I felt when my younger sisters would finally understand some of their homework because of my help. This was the birth of my teaching desire. At ORCA, I am able to help my students reach that ‘aha!’ moment. I get to know the students and their families on a much more intimate level than I was ever able to reach in a bricks-and-mortar setting. Phone calls and daily WebMail messages, as well as our fantastic face-to-face meetings, allow me to get to know more about each of my students, their families, and their backgrounds. After all, where else can a student feel comfortable calling a teacher just to chat about spring break plans?
My favorite thing about working at Connections Academy is getting to see my students during field trips, when everyone is excited and socializing, and putting a name with a face. I also enjoy my great colleagues and being on the ‘cutting edge’ of technology in education.
I would tell a prospective family that this is an awesome school, but that it takes serious commitment all around to make it work. Teacher, parent, and student—it’s a team effort.”
