Mr. Yanowitz is a secondary school advisory teacher at Oregon Connections Academy (ORCA). He started teaching in 2007. Mr. Yanowitz earned a bachelor of arts from Beloit College and a master of education specializing in curriculum and instruction from Portland State University. When asked about his teaching career, Mr. Yanowitz said:
“I became a teacher because I want to help students see the relevance of history, learn to write, and hone a passion for learning. I love that at ORCA, I am able to help students in real time. As an advisor, I help students take in a broader view of their year, helping students to track and identify notable trends in their learning in order to create a sense of academic self-awareness. I have an informal advisory style; I assist students by reviewing their written work and then focus on the common problem areas. The benefit of teaching at ORCA is the unlimited ability to spend one-on-one time with students as needed. There are no time constraints like buzzers, group management, or other hallmarks of bricks-and-mortar schools. I love having students in every corner of the state because you see so many different perspectives! At ORCA, we are able to offer a fundamental level of structure, as well as an amazing amount of flexibility in order to create a very personalized experience. “
