Keeping Online School Students Connected
Even in an online school environment, Oregon Connections Academy (ORCA) students remain connected to a supportive community and network of other students and teachers. Teachers hold regular LiveLesson® sessions online to reinforce concepts and offer students a way to compare experiences, share ideas, and have fun working together as they learn. Parents have control over the level of social interaction students have with their peers by combining participation in Connections Academy online clubs with activities in their own communities as they feel comfortable.
With access to special school events, online school clubs, and field trips, ORCA students can meet and learn with other students, taking advantage of many opportunities to explore the world around them while forming bonds and friendships with other students. These social experiences also allow students to learn how to work in a team and help them with the development of communication and leadership skills, all while gaining social confidence. Plus, they’re really fun!
Allowing Flexibility for Extracurriculars
At ORCA, many of our students are busy with not only school-sponsored activities but also activities held within their own local communities. Our program offers students a greater opportunity to participate in extracurriculars given the flexibility of scheduling. With access to these opportunities to explore their interests outside of the walls of a classroom, our students can build character and gain confidence, two essential skills we encourage them to develop.
Working with Families
The families of students play an important role in the educational experience. We understand that what works for one family won’t work for them all, which is why our program gives families the freedom to create a schedule that best fits their needs and interests.
Parents play a crucial part at ORCA, filling the role of Learning Coach, where they’re encouraged to communicate regularly with teachers and keep their student on track.
We offer several opportunities for families to learn how to best support their students and to connect with other parents, community coordinators, teachers, and school counselors both in person and online through:
- The Virtual Learning Connections blog, which offers information and tips about topics applicable to virtual schooling families
- Learning Coach training and open houses held both online and in local teaching centers
- Club ORANGE, which is a network of highly involved parents in the ORCA community
Participating in the Online Learning Community at Large
With the help of community coordinators and Learning Coaches, we can arrange activities and opportunities for our students to participate in events throughout the state, giving each student access to a broad virtual learning community.
